New York loft on a budget
Do you dream of the New York loft style, but are afraid it will cost the earth? Choose a sliding door solution from Garderobemekka and you’ll get both style and function, but at an affordable price.

GARDEROBEMEKKA delivers and installs bespoke sliding door wardrobes in Greater Oslo and Trondheim, at the best price on the market.
The wrought iron look at a fraction of the price
The New York loft style has taken interior design Norway by storm, with its rustic expression and generous ratio of daylight and sense of space. The distinctive glass walls with wrought iron frames provide stylish zoning, but if you go for the high-end version, it can be a costly affair. Fortunately, Garderobemekka has an affordable solution at a fraction of the cost.
“Our sliding doors are made of toughened glass, which makes them just as solid as the exclusive variant. They’re also easier to install because they require less structural adaptation. But the price is about a third,” says Tor Arne Moss Westlund, regional manager for Garderobemekka in Oslo.

Flexible rooms
In the 1990s, a number of abandoned warehouses and industrial buildings in New York were converted into new loft apartments. Much of the original look was retained, with sturdy ceiling beams, exposed ventilation pipes and unplastered concrete and brick. This became the origin of the New York loft style, a rough, industrial style where glass walls with black bars play an important role. In the industrial premises, the glass walls had the job of shielding against noise and creating different work zones, and they have exactly the same function today.
“Glass walls are effective zone dividers that create flexible spaces. They dampen noise while retaining daylight and a sense of space. That’s why they’re perfect in small living spaces where you need to meet many needs in a small area,” says Westlund.
Room partitioning with glass is a growing trend. As cities and towns become denser and we drive less, people have fewer and fewer square meters to live in – but not fewer things. This makes efficient use of space and flexibility increasingly important. If you divide a room with a sliding glass door, you get more zones and usage options without shrinking the room. The solution is also well suited to larger homes.
“Large rooms can be difficult to furnish. A glass wall or sliding door can shield part of the room and make it warmer and more intimate,” says Westlund.

Silent system
Do you need an office space but lack that extra room? Do you want a guest room, but without shrinking the sense of space in the living room that you use on a daily basis? A sliding glass door is a flexible, inexpensive and space-saving solution, and can also be an aesthetic focal point in your home. You can read about this, for example, in our story about Venera Beqiri, who found that the New York loft-style sliding door became the element that connected her industrial kitchen and classic city apartment into a stylish whole. In addition to the low price, the sliding door solution also has several practical advantages.
“Wrought iron is stylish, but it’s a bit noisy. Our sliding doors, on the other hand, glide silently on the rails. The fact that the bottom rails are also built low means that they work very well as door thresholds,” concludes Tor Arne Moss Westlund.

Utilize the space with sliding doors too!
Sliding doors with translucent glass and black profiles and glazing bars are perfect as room dividers and are an affordable alternative to wrought-iron doors that give the same “New York loft style” that is so popular.
If, on the other hand, you want to conceal your kitchen, laundry room or bedroom, sliding doors with colored glass or mirrors can be a good solution. Here you can read more about how to utilize the space with sliding doors in all rooms.
